Voodoo Chili – a song about an awkward time in my life.

Smoke, Skull, Cat eyes, 8 ball Voodoo Chili Image

When I turned 21 I was working a production job with hopes of being a rockstar or artist-designer. The company I worked for had promised me a job in design but when my supervisor quit I got the position of production supervisor and when the opportunity to do graphics came along the boss told me that I was doing such an amazing job at management that he needed me there and hired someone else for the design position.

At 21 I was working 40-55 hours a week depending on the time of year, practicing or gigging with Midnight Voodoo Party 3 times a week, writing music, promoting and partying. None the less to say I never slept much.

Life was pretty crazy, to say the least, and sometimes I felt I was on autopilot or just moving too fast to make good decisions. I was reflecting on just how out of control my life was when I wrote Voodoo Chili.

As you read the lyrics below you can kind of see where it can relate to perhaps a time in your life where you did not feel like you are in control of your life and that is what I wrote this song about.

Made my mind but don’t know what I did with it.
Talk comes cheap and you’re always full of shit.
Lose control it happens to me everyday.
I can’t think straight can’t find the words to say. No way!!!

Lost my point of just what I’m doing here.
My heart it rules my mind is always full of fear.
I try too hard and cast a spell upon me
to walk this earth like a mindless zombie…you’ll see my reality!

Chorus:
I’m not me–I got lost in voodoo chile
Don’t bury me–I’m not dead voodoo chile
I’m not me–I got lost in voodoo chile
Don’t bury me–I’m not dead voodoo chile

V2
Voodoo chills running up and down my spine.
Voodoo doll created by my own mind.
Fight myself to end this foolish misery.
This voodoo curse has really got the best of me.

With hungry eyes I look back at my history.
I try real hard to make it like it used to be.
I was free just because of my attitude.
I lost my way in this world that’s kind of rude.
